"All About Kea - a framework to focus kea conservation initiatives" describes the Kea Conservation Trust's (KCT) direction for the conservation and management of kea in NZ.
The framework is divided into four focus areas:
- Population size, trends and dynamics are understood.
- Threats to kea are identified and actively managed.
- Positive public perception and awareness of kea is increased among all stakeholders.
- The captive population is actively managed to increase welfare, education, advocacy and research potential.
The aim of the document is to report on current kea knowledge (population status and threats), highlight knowledge gaps which need to be filled and to provide a detailed project and activities list to address each focal area. The plan is not only to be used by the KCT but is a community document which will enable other individuals, communities and organisations passionate about kea, to join in on efforts to ensure the species survival.
The four documents as a whole, seek to drive and coordinate kea conservation projects over the next 10 years, but their success will depend on the wider community working together in a unified manner.
